Feeling Blah About Your Workout Routine? Here’s the Antidote

By now, many of us are well-versed in the benefits of a diverse workout routine. Changing up muscle groups, mixing cardio & strength as well as encouraging new styles of movement all contribute to a strong body that’s more resilient against injury. Beyond the very real physical benefits of switching it up, our minds need new experiences as well.

You may be the type of person that thrives with a routine. Patterns give you a strong foundation that you can improve on incrementally & give you a sense of control & purpose in your day to day. But, we’ve all felt that nagging feeling in our routines that gets louder over time – that’s right, boredom. Even though each class, playlist & workout is slightly different, it’s almost like we’ve cataloged all the pieces & stop being surprised by the result.

The antidote? It’s time to deepen your physical practice & introduce other elements of change within your routine.

QUIT SKIPPING THE CRUST. Think of your workout like a slice of pizza. Are you only here for the toppings? Have you relegated the crust to just a handle to shovel the real party? The parts of our workout that we just get through can surprise us. Hate the treadmill? That means there’s the most opportunity for growth. Plank got you down? Focus on perfecting one element at a time & see how being fully present changes how you feel about it.

INCORPORATE MOBILITY. There’s more to physical activity than just power & speed. Working on your mobility will make your squats deeper, your down dog longer & your plie squat lower. It also is one of the most beneficial things for your body as you age. Your body will thank you for a few extra minutes post-class working on your hip mobility or prioritizing a yoga practice throughout the week.

BE A FORM FANATIC. Once you’ve finally hit the 3-minute plank challenge successfully, there’s still self-improvement to be found. Small adjustments in your form not only make a move more challenge, but more successful – tucking your hips, pressing out of your chest, take these cues from the instructor and feel how your strength improves even just in a plank.

BREAK THE ICE. Whether you come to the gym solo or have a go-to workout buddy, one of the very best things about being in the Fly community? There are so many amazing, talented, kind, funny people around you in every class. Introduce yourself, plan a happy hour, reach out – we’re all here to be part of the community.

When you look beyond the stats or just getting through your routine beginning to the end, you’ll find a lot of satisfaction in leaning into the elements of your sweat sessions & learning more about yourself, your limits & your strength as you go.
