The Impact of Community

It takes a lot of courage to step outside your comfort zone and to try new things. It’s especially hard when those new things are workout classes or a fitness studio where everyone “looks the part”—like they know exactly where to go and what to do. The notion of potentially being the newbie can be intimidating and scary.

I know from firsthand experience how stressful it can be to try new classes. Every time I go to New York or San Francisco, I try to reach outside of my comfort zone by taking new classes and pushing my boundaries. I remember when I couldn’t master the mini trampoline class (no, it’s not my favorite!) and the time I tried the trapeze class and couldn’t jump off the platform for 15 seconds I was so afraid.

It’s totally natural to be nervous, but what I can say from firsthand experience is that when you have supportive and positive community around you to lift you up, it makes an incredible difference. No matter where you are in your journey, the impact of a community can’t be overlooked.

What I’ve found is that your fitness community offers much more than a roof and a routine. It’s about positivity — that feeling you get as you come through the front door. Your community brings the energy you feel and makes you a part of something bigger, where you know you’re supporting one another in your goals and passions.

From what I’ve seen, the members of the Fly community share a simple goal: to get stronger in a positive and healthy way. There are no boundaries, definitions or judgments. There is only support and positivity. Our community defines strength through mental, spiritual, physical and emotional means. We all lift each other up.

One thing I hear from clients all the time is how amazing our community is—and how it keeps them coming back. In my experience, people who are most successful in their goals have support and a solid foundation. Anytime we can build one another up and help one each other get stronger—we are fortifying our own community.

The Fly community is pretty incredible and unique. We have all kinds of people sweating together on any given day. You’ll see lawyers, doctors, students, parents, young professionals, CEOs, most people being some combination of these things. They ride, squat & pulse, showing their commitment and grit each and every day.

Even though my entire life I’ve loved to work out on my own, I have developed a love for working out in these classes. I find I almost crave certain classes and going to the studio. I feel like I’m invited to a party every day. People who come to the studio are off having coffee together, forming new relationships daily.

The greatest thing is that there’s no judgment. There aren’t body standards, there’s just a supportiveness and an energy where people seem to give one another the room to move, grow & succeed. It’s a place where the philosophy on the walls rings true, where the people who walk through the doors “make everybody feel like a somebody.”
